Small really is the new big

Seth Godin had a great post a day or so ago entitled Small is the new big. Read it, it is good. Here are just a few of the highlights.

Big used to matter, big was good, big was the Fortune 500, there you made money!  Big crashed. Enron down, Anderson down, World Trade Center down, big computers got small....and so small happened.

Small companies make more money than big companies, little jets are faster (door to door) than big ones, small restaurant owners greet you at the door and small means you can tell the truth on your blog.

It really is a great post, [read it].

Here is why I like the post, it makes sense for your church. At Fellowship we have had this motto for many, many years. “Were not a large church, we are a small town.” That means that no matter how large we get, we must remain small. Now, that is not easy, in fact it gets very difficult at times. We use every tool that we can think of to make this possible, but the key must be a personal touch. A few examples are, every new person that walks through the door that we know about gets a personal call from a pastor. If a child misses three weeks in a row we personally call them. In Seth’s post he says this, “A small church has a minister with the time to visit you in the hospital when you’re sick.” Yea, we do to, it just is not the Sr. Pastor. We have a team of 50+ volunteers that do hospital visits lead by a pastor on staff.

I do think that Small is the new Big! And I completely agree with Seth; Small is the new big only when the person running the small thinks big.

I say: Act Small. Think Big.

I guess that you can say the we followed this model, 3 new “small” satellite campuses this year! What do you think about Acting Small, but Thinking Big?
