“At its root, obedience is a trust issue. Obedience is evidence that you trust God. If you don’t trust God, you will struggle to obey Him. A lack of trust is a lack of wisdom.” - Brian Houston
It’s a bit harsh, but let me push this concept one level deeper. In these moments of disobedience, and a lack of trust, realize that you are telling God...”I got this! God, I trust myself more than you.”
Take a moment, and just say that out loud. Seriously, just play along. Hey God, I got this. I have seen this before, and I really think I can handle this better than you.
How did that feel? For me, when I do that exercise I kinda think a lightning bolt may come and strike me down. Sorta joking but not really. It’s embarrassing and dishonoring and such a lie. I do not really believe this, and my guess is you do not either. However, I use this example intentionally because often times we live our lives this way. In our times with God, worship on the weekends or whatever that looks like we are full on Jesus followers and in agreement with His will. But when the work day comes, or the rubber meets the road we just take our personal Jesus bobblehead and set him aside and trust our own wisdom and instincts. Wow, that punch hurt just writing it.
It happens to all of us, this thing called life that can distract and blur our vision. May we step into today with vigor and passion to trust in the Lord completely. May we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us and lead every decision we make. Lord, grow our wisdom and may we be obedient to your voice.
