John Ventry, What’s Working for You?

I learned this concept called 6x6 from a church contact a couple of years ago.  I am really good at completing tasks and the day to day of my job.  However, continuing to make progress towards future goals and planning can be challenging.

That is where the 6x6 concept comes in.  I take and make a list of the 6 most important things that I need to get done over the next 6 weeks (in a really demanding job, this timeline might be 6 days).  I take 1 hour a day and work strictly on this list.  This time may be spent reading a book to improve management skills, planning for projects that need to begin, or visioning for the future.  In order for this to really be effective, I must utilize the time of day when I am at my best – which for me is mornings. This concept requires discipline, and it is easy to put on the back burner.  However, it allows me to maintain the demands of today and work towards the plans of tomorrow.  The hardest part is making sure that 1 hour per day is guarded.  I constantly have office interruptions and telephone calls, so protecting that time can be tricky.

This is one thing that has helped me out, and I hope that you find it beneficial.
