2 Peter 3 - The Easy Button

2 Peter 3 - The Easy Button

There are a few team members in our office that have the easy on their desks. If you have not seen them before, its a rather large red button that says easy, and when you push it, it says, “That was easy.”

To be honest, often, when I read about the Day of the Lord, I think it sounds like pressing the easy button. Here in 2 Peter 3, Peter is talking about the importance of the times we are living in, and the urgency we must have.

“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.” - ‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Here we read about the Lord coming like a thief, the heavens disappear, and all is destroyed by fire. Ok, this sounds a little dark and gloomy, but this is also when the new earth and new heaven are formed, and righteousness dwells. That part seems fantastic, and honestly, that is the part that sounds like the easy button. All this pain we live in, injustice, suffering, disorder, and disunity will be gone in a flash, and the new earth and heaven are formed, and righteousness dwells everywhere. Tranquility, YES!

“as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.” - ‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:12-13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I believe deep inside us, we are wired for this, wired for community, harmony, and living among our creator. We are placed on earth, but this is not our home, we look forward to dwelling among righteousness, and we yearn for it.

But, amid this deep yearning for the coming of the Lord, we must remember eternity is just that, forever! I do yearn for heaven and am ready to be there right now. But the issue I have is there are many people I know and love that are not ready, they have not given their lives to Christ, and are not prepared.

“So, my beloved friends, with all that you have to look forward to, may you be eager to be found living pure lives when you come into his presence, without blemish and filled with peace. And keep in mind that our Lord’s extraordinary patience simply means more opportunity for salvation, just as our dear brother Paul wrote to you with the wisdom that God gave him.” - ‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:14-15‬ ‭TPT‬‬

We have the time we need to get our lives right before God, and also do our part to help those we love, and our neighbors come to know Jesus. Peter closed his second letter with two main points about this topic, check this out.

“Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” - ‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:17-18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Be on guard of the false teachers, those that will take us off our game and lead us down a path of destruction. And just like we talked about yesterday, we must always be growing in our faith, grace, and knowledge of our Lord.

It’s true, oftentimes, in the midst of the chaos of the world, the riots the injustice the shelter in place, and the disunity I want to press the easy button and have the Lord return. But I am thankful He has not come, and I am so grateful that the Lord does not want anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. Praise God for this.

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” - ‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:9‬ ‭NIV‬‬
