John 17 - The Lords Prayer

John 17 - The Lords Prayer

John 17 is Jesus looking heavenward and praying to God the Father. So much beauty and mystery in this prayer. One thing that jumps out to me is that Jesus, fully God, and fully man prayed. Jesus is God fully. Why did he need to pray, He was One with the Father, He was God...and yet he prayed. This is so powerful;

“And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” - ‭‭John‬ ‭17:5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus, fully God, was connecting and praying to His Father to glorify himself in the presence like it was before for the world began. Whoa. I can not imagine what this glory looked like, the glorious Creator, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as one in perfect unity and harmony before the world began. Jesus, just before his time on earth was done, was remembering what it was like before the world began, and He yearned for that presence with his Father.

I can stay stuck in this thought, but I think the biggest takeaway for me is the practicality of this prayer. If you strip back all the content of the prayer, you have the structure of Jesus praying for Himself, for those closet to him, and then for those who would come to know Himself. His prayer is a prayer of unity with God, for himself in union with God, for those closest to Him to be united with God, and for those in the world to believe in Jesus through their message, that all of them MAY BE ONE! This simple structure should be a framework for my daily prayer, praying for unity with Christ, praying for those closet to me, and then praying for those coming to know Jesus and for the father to be glorified. Love is the central theme and a wonderful close to this prayer.

“I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” - ‭‭John‬ ‭17:26‬ ‭NIV‬‬
