2 Thessalonians 2 - Winners

2 Thessalonians 2 - Winners

Such an interesting chapter! Skip Heitzig has some outstanding teaching on this book and chapter that helped me process and digest it. The short version is this, the Thessalonians were being persecuted severely, and they were being led to believe by false teaching that this was connected to the day of the Lord already coming.  Paul heard this and wanted to correct this false teaching and remind them of what he had previously taught them.

“Don’t you remember that when I was with you, I used to tell you these things?” - ‭‭2 Thessalonians‬ ‭2:5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In Paul's short time with the Thessalonians, he taught them about this, but they had fallen to some false teaching. The next part was beneficial to hear from pastor Skip. Check this out.

“And you know what is holding him back, for he can be revealed only when his time comes. For this lawlessness is already at work secretly, and it will remain secret until the one who is holding it back steps out of the way.” - ‭‭2 Thessalonians‬ ‭2:6-7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Here is where Skip unpacked some compelling teaching. A debated topic with theologians and the general agreement is the Holy Spirit is what is holding Satan back. Unpacking this a bit, the Holy Spirit lives in you, in me, and in believers across the world. This is one way God works throughout the earth through Christ-followers and people with this Holy Spirit. People standing for truth, living for Jesus, and holding up these values. This brings balance to our world, and is “holding him back.” When the rapture comes, back to v1 Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him... when we are gathers with Jesus and taken away, the Holy Spirit in us will be removed from the Earth.

I had never really thought about this before, processing the world with no Christians and the Holy Spirit at work this way. This would be Hell on Earth when there is no opposing voice of truth and resistance. Wild to think about. However, no matter the views here within theology, pre-tribulation, post-tribulation, I am not sure it matters. What we know is while here on Earth we and Christ-followers have a job to do; we are to follow Jesus and be salt and light. He has great news, and Paul throws this in;

“And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.” - ‭‭2 Thessalonians‬ ‭2:8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus wins! We will walk through trials; we will be persecuted and challenged while here on Earth, that’s just part of it. But again, let me say Jesus wins. We know then end of the story, we know who wins, and we are on the winning team. I am walking away again with action items to do all that is possible to grow the winning team. Be encouraged with these closing words today.

“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.” - ‭‭2 Thessalonians‬ ‭2:16-17‬ ‭NIV‬‬
