Hebrews 11 - By Faith
Hebrews 11 - By Faith
By faith, that is the central theme and message here in Hebrews 11. It opens up, giving us a definition of faith.
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” - Hebrews 11:1 NIV
I think a key challenge we face today is we do live in a world where seeing is believing. Such a culture of materialism and things must be tangible to us. But seeing is believing is the exact opposite of what we read here about faith.
Hebrews 11 goes on and on about the hero’s of faith; Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and Rahab. The author says so much, we even got this;
“And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets,” - Hebrews 11:32 NIV
So, we live in a culture that preaches to us that seeing is believing, but we as Christ-followers must move beyond the tangible and enter into something much more significant. We must walk by faith, not by sight. Jesus said this;
“Everything is possible for one who believes.” - Mark 9:23
I liked what I heard from Pastor Sandy Adams this morning. Faith is better caught than taught. You see, it’s impossible to be taught faith, to read about it, and then have it. No, we need to live it out and walk it out in our lives. And the best way to do this is to surround ourselves with others who live by faith and walk with them. I quoted Richard Rohr this morning in my Dispatch, and it’s a perfect quote for this message;
"We do not think ourselves into new ways of living, we live ourselves into new ways of thinking." - Richard Rohr
Faith, it’s a central theme of the Christian walk. It’s an act of releasing and letting go of the tangible, and walking away from the seeing is believing crowd. Without faith, well, this is what Hebrews tells us;
“And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” - Hebrews 11:6 NIV
This verse is so rich and so powerful. You see, most of us just read the first part of this verse. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Yes, this is true, and most of us are working on this and trying to walk this out. But DO NOT miss the close of the verse. Anyone who comes to God must believe that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Whoa! We walk in faith, believing that God blesses us. This is a life of abundance, a life overflowing with generosity and love. A faith-filled life is a life full of expectancy of God to deliver and for God to bless us who earnestly seek him. This is the good life. This is the blessed life and life full of faith. Remember, we do not think ourselves into new ways of living, we live ourselves into new ways of thinking. Let’s choose to live the blessed life today; let's walk by faith and not by sight. Amen.
