Hebrews 12:4-13 - God is Not Angry

Hebrews 12:4-13 - God is Not Angry

A large chunk of Hebrews 12 is about God’s discipline. The section header for the NLT is God’s Discipline Proves His Love. I believe this, I take this Word as truth, but my challenge is we often have the wrong view or perspective on this section and translate this discipline into God being angry.

Broader than even this section, I know for me that I have historically struggled and had a view of God being angry, disappointed, or even embarrassed by my actions. This distorted view of God leads to a performance mode to work to please God, to live up to these expectations, and to honor Him by works and actions. And when I fall short, then, well, God is disappointed. I have to say, this is a lie, and this perspective and mindset of God will hold us back. We must understand the true nature of God, the fact that God is love.

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God because God is love.” - ‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:7-8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son...” - ‭‭John‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The very nature of God is love because God is love! God so loved because that is what He is; therefore, that is what He does. Jesus, God’s Son, is the perfect expression of what love looks like. So when I read Hebrews 12, and get into discipline, I can not carry my earthly view of discipline or any of my personal experiences with my father or others around discipline. And, to be real honest, I can not carry my own mistakes and failures as a father to my children in this area.

I loved how Eugene Peterson worded this section in The Message translation;

God is educating you...God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God’s holy best...it’s the well-trained who find themselves mature in their relationship with God.” - ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12:4-11‬ ‭MSG‬‬

In a 2014 RELEVANT Magazine article, Jason Clark wrote this:

Discipline and principles are important, but the Christian faith was never meant to be about “trying harder,” it’s about becoming sure in God’s love. Only through the discovery of God’s love and pleasure are you empowered to do the “greater works” Jesus promised and the pastor is preaching about.

God is not angry. God is love, and His love looks like Jesus. May we look back at the opening of this chapter and fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer, and perfector of faith.

Lord, thank you for loving us. Thank you for educating and training us. Lord, thank you for drawing us closer to you and embracing us no matter our actions or missteps. Lord, I ask that we can stay focused on fixing our eyes on Jesus and let us be reminded that Jesus is our model. Lord, we love you. Amen.
