Hebrews 3:1-6 - We Are God’s House

The builder of all things is God. Maybe that stood out so clearly, so vivid because I watched Rob Bell’s Everything Is Spiritual last night. I have watched the original version that was recorded in 2006 countless times, but last night I watched his updated version from 2016 with Robin and Reia. It was different than the first version, but for nearly 2hrs (Rob in his very Rob way), he expanded upon the majesty, greatness, and sovereignty of God. The builder and creator of all things.

“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.” - ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭3:1-2‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The majesty of God, the builder of all things, the center, the creator of the vast universe, and the author here in Hebrews, is telling the readers to consider Jesus. This is an interesting and odd opening for me. Consider Jesus? What is also strange to me is the use of the word apostle. This commentary gave me a little more context and clarity around these words.

The ancient Greek word translated consider is katanoein: “It does not mean simply to look at or to notice a thing. Anyone can look at a thing or even notice it without really seeing it. The word means to fix the attention on something in such a way that its inner meaning, the lesson it is designed to teach, may be learned.”

The message is plain: consider this. Consider that God loves you so much He sent the ultimate Messenger, Christ JesusConsider also how important it is for you to pay attention to God’s ultimate Apostle, who is Christ Jesus.

So as I apply this clarity, it seems as if the take away is yes, God is the builder of all things, center, and creator of it all, but make sure you fix your attention on and pay deep attention to Jesus because Jesus is the ultimate Apostle. Then we read (again) that Jesus is the greatest. Chapter 1,2 and now 3 we are reading that Jesus is above all, and greater now than Moses.

“Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son.” - ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭3:5-6‬a ‭ESV‬‬

Such a contrast in words here, Moses was a servant in God’s house, Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. So we are continuing to see the separation of Jesus, Son of God, and how he is the greatest. Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son (Jesus), but who is God’s house?

“And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.” - ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭3:6‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Whoa, we are God’s house! As holy brothers who share in a heavenly calling, we are God’s house united in and by Christ. So many thoughts flood through my mind about being God’s house, how a house is used, the purpose of a house the purpose for God’s house. If we are His house, what is the appropriate use for the house?

“Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.” - ‭‭James‬ ‭1:27‬ ‭NLT‬‬

As a house, God’s house it seems as if we are to “do” to act, to bring love to this world. Caring for orphans, widows, and stewarding our house appropriately. All thought the Bible, and Jesus as our ambassador, our apostle, our model showed love and lived a life as a model for us. Jesus is our savor, but we must not stop at that; Jesus’ life as the ultimate ambassador for God is our model.

And last I will end with this; if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. The writer put an “if” in the sentence. We are his house, IF! Life can and will get rough, challenging, and our circumstances adjust and change on a near-weekly basis. Our hope must remain confident, we must be bold and boasting in our hope in Christ alone. Lord God, give us the strength and courage to stay confident, to be bold in our hope! Amen.

“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭3:1-6‬ ‭ESV‬‬
