Spring is coming here in the states, and those of us who like lovely green and lush yards are focused on proper lawn care. Just a few weeks ago, we sprayed preemergent weed control, and then we will overseed the fescue, then hit it with some fertilizer. This year should be our last year of fighting the “old” yard, and we should have our new yard in place and thriving.

When it comes to the lawn, I can do all this work, hire out the parts I don't want to do, or like to do...but I have no control over the grass growing, and all the new healthily seeds taking root and thriving. I do my part, and allow nature to do its. This came to mind as I was reading 1 Corinthians 3 today. Paul is seeing and dealing with some significant issues inside the church. Church attendees and leaders are split over who, or what pastor they are following, who is better, and more there style.

“For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings? What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” - ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭3:4-7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Paul makes it crystal clear that the human element, our style, our approach, our views, and bias, and thoughts are NOTHING of importance. We are merely the servant, and only God makes things grow.

I was reading this, and it kind of stings. Yeah, I think its a bit of pride and ego, but I realize it is vital to recognize our contribution in the spiritual development process as just a tool that God can and will use as He desires. Who am I?  am a sinner, I am a mere human who constantly falls short of God glory. I am nothing without Christ, and that is a good reminder.

“So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.” - ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭3:21-23‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Maybe we need to read this to keep ourselves and our egos in check. Perhaps we need to read this to make sure we are not putting other leaders and pastors on a pedestal and having an unhealthy view of human leaders. Maybe we needed to read this to destroy the comparison game, the game of pastor vs. pastor, or church vs. church and who is better. All this human view of who is more significant is garbage. Only God can make things grow!
