COVID-19 Virus

Today will look a little different, and I am going to start at the end today and head a little off course of 2 Corinthians 11.

“And that’s not the half of it, when you throw in the daily pressures and anxieties of all the churches. When someone gets to the end of his rope, I feel the desperation in my bones. When someone is duped into sin, an angry fire burns in my gut.” - ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭11:28-29‬ ‭MSG‬‬

I switched to the Message to give a little more context and color around what Paul was saying near the end of this chapter. Paul burns and is deeply impacted by people far from Christ. This is the burden Paul carries, and honestly, so many who are in ministry. The deep hurt and pain that comes seeing the hurt and pain people walk through when they don’t know or follow Jesus.

Think about what we are walking through right now as a society and the world. The pandemic known as Coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused fear, anxiety, and mass concern around the world. Our economy has tanked, and people are in a panic with their 401k’s, and investment portfolios losing crazy value. Mass hysteria is sitting in with the health concerns around this virus. The real virus is turning out to be fear, anxiety, and panic.

It’s times like these, today where I have desperation in my bones for those who don't know Jesus. Not to trivialize our current situation, sure, I understand there are some real challenged we must face. But, the reality is the things of this world that are in chaos right now can not and will not ever produce real stability. The anxiety people are facing is only because we are putting our hope and faith in things of this world. I am preaching to myself here as well!

If you are weary and in a place of anxiety, panic, or concern, may I offer you these words from Matthew chapter 8?

“Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” - ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭8:24-27‬ ‭NIV‬‬

This COVID-19 situation might be the furious storm that is surrounding you today. The fear and panic it has stirred up could feel like waves crashing down on you, and the emotions are sweeping over you at this moment. My encouragement is turn to Jesus, ask for Him to save you, express your feelings of drowning, and panic! Stop looking to things of this world to help you, turn to Jesus. He can calm the storm in you, the real virus of fear, panic, and anxiety. The circumstances all around us might not change or improve for a while, but Jesus can calm the storm brewing in us.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” - ‭‭John‬ ‭14:27‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Powerful words from our savior, Jesus! Let them soak in and move you to peace and comfort.

Final thought...and I know I moved right off of 2 Cor 11! In these times, please remember those of you who are close to Jesus, and walking with him are a reflection of him to those around you. In these crazy times, you just might be the living Christ to your neighbor, friend, co-worker, etc.

“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your interests, but take an interest in others, too.” - ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:3-4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” - ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25:37-40‬ ‭NIV‬‬
