Ephemeral
Ephemeral - 2 Corinthians 5:1-10
Snapchat, InstaStories, and so much around social media in this day and age are ephemeral. If you are not aware of that term, ephemeral is temporary or lasting just a short time. Snaps disappear, stories are here, then they are gone, and this generation is drawn to this type of media.
Reading 2 Corinthians 5 this morning, we learn and unpack something else that is ephemeral, our body.
“For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.” - 2 Corinthians 5:1 NIV
Here Paul describes our earthly body as a tent and our heavenly body as a building from God. An excellent visual, here on earth, think about your body as a little one-person camping tent, and our heavenly body as a massive Tesla Gigafactory. We know our body is a temple of God, and we should take care of it...but no matter the care we receive, it is merely a tent vs. a 5 million sq. ft. state of the art building. And this is why, as a Christ-follower, we are profoundly yearning for heaven.
“Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.” - 2 Corinthians 5:2-4 NIV
The ephemeral life we have in this earthly body drives us to desire more, our heavenly dwelling. It’s built into us! Check this out:
“Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord.” - 2 Corinthians 5:6 NIV
So, while on earth, in this tent of a body we must realize all is ephemeral. All are short-lived, a Snap here then gone, an InstaStory that disappears! Our lives need to be deliberate and intentional since they are so short, and we do have a purpose here on earth.
“For we live by faith, not by sight.” - 2 Corinthians 5:7 NIV
Our faith drives us forward, not our site. Things we see will not necessarily drive us to the right decisions and outcomes. Pleasing the world and the things of this world will not serve us well. But our faith, our yearning for heaven, will drive us to the things that matter. How Paul drives this home is a huge take away for us.
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” - 2 Corinthians 5:10 NIV
Boom! The judgment seat of Christ. We will all sit before God and give an account for all the things we did, in and with our tents. Visualize that day as best as you can, sitting before God, the creator of the universe, and all things and giving an account for all that you did on earth.
I don’t know about you, but just thinking about that give me chills. In a good way, and a bit of a scary way. Lord, may we not be focused on the things of this world, the ephemeral things that are short-lived! God draws us to the characteristics of you, something that matters, and give us the clarity and faith to focus on what is your best.
