Grace

Grace - Galatians 3

Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost, but now am found

T'was blind but now I see…

As I read in Galatians 3 this morning, my mind takes me to those lyrics...Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound. I was putting my own story in the lyric and knowing how God reached down from heaven to lift me out of my lost and dying lifestyle decades ago. Praise God. It was on a Sunday in Irving, Texas I stopped putting my faith in things of this world, and turned my life to Jesus and stepped into the family of God, joining the family of Abraham, the man of faith.

“Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.” - ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:7-9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Unlike the Galatians, I was not wrapped up in legalism and the religious law. I was wrapped up in that law of the world, and things of this world. Processing those this morning, I can see how they can be very similar. Both legalism and worldlyism (not sure if that is a word) have us put our faith in things other than Christ alone. Both have idols, and those idols are put up on pillars, and we worship them. In legalism, we can find ourselves worshiping the law itself, the self-righteous and prideful ego that will form from worshiping the law. In worldlyism, we put other things on the altar and worship them, our investment accounts, our homes, cars, corner offices, kid's achievements, etc, etc.

Both legalism and worldlyism lock people up in bondage. Slaves to a master of death. Locked in shackles, hopeless and chasing after the wind. But that bondage was broken, the shackles set free and the endless chase stopped. Christ Jesus is the single answer.

“Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. So in Christ Jesus, you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” - ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:23-29‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Oh, death, where are you? Where is your sting? We are set free in Christ alone and are clothed in His righteousness.

Oh, and don’t miss this. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Every worldly way to separate, hate, divide, alienate, and so on has been abolished under Christ.

Thank you, Lord, for saving a wretch like me. As we go into our day today, Lord, may we carry this message to those we interact with and indeed be the light of Christ in this dark world.
