Order - 1 Corinthians 14

Today, a few new things surfaced, I love when this happens. I am not sure why I didn’t see this before, my guess is because I just have never really been comfortable with tongues, so I didn’t pay much attention to this chapter. Not proud of that fact, but I could see that happen.

As I have matured and grown in my faith and relationship with Jesus, I have a new appreciation for the gifts of the Spirit. I do not have the gift of tongues, but I have a deep appreciation for it and would love to and be eager to receive the gift. Anyway, let's dive into today's revelation for me.

“Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging, and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.” - ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:1-4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The way Paul describes these gifts is very interesting and new to me. Here are my notes I wrote down while reading and listening to this chapter.

—-

Eagerly desire the gifts of the Spirit!

Tongues - Praise, or prayer to God

  • Us speaking to God, not other people

  • The one gift that benefits the individual and not others

Prophecy - Strengthening, encouraging, comfort others

  • God speaking to us or through us

  • There is power in building up, and cheering up

What was so powerful for me in this reading is again seeing God’s character revealed. It shows that in all things, God’s character is others-focused for the blessing of others, not self. God is love.

“I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.” - ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

It’s essential to get this right, to live in an others-focused way. I am blessed to be a blessing! Paul closes this chapter out in a way that any Myers Briggs “J” will love, order.

“Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.” - ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:39-40‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I can understand why this is critical to Paul, and these gifts could have the ability to become a bit chaotic. When you read the full chapter, you will gain the context and the importance Paul put on when to use these gifts and when not. These gifts from God are designed for a specific purpose, and we must bring order to them. We also read that the person controls these gifts; the gift does not control the person. Order, it’s crucial in this context, and it’s essential in so many other settings as well. Lord, may we honor and glorify you today with the order we bring to our lives.

“But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.” - ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:40‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“But all things should be done decently and in order.” - ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:40‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.” - ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:40‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“Let all things be done decently and in order.” - ‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭14:40‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
