Subject to Governing Authorities
Left, Right, Red, Blue, Republican, or Democrat. It’s 2020, and it seems as if politics and raging passion for affiliation is brewing in all Americans. We are on the heels of a historical moment of Impeachment of a President, and staring down an election that is just a few months away. What does the Bible say about this time we are in, surely we can gain insight and wisdom on how to navigate this moment in time.
We turn to Romans 13, and no matter your bias or official political affiliation, I believe these wise words from Paul can speak to us.
“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” - Romans 13:1 NIV
Out of the gate, in very Paul like manner, he just laid down a serious statement that would have rocked the Romans. Everyone be subject to the governing authorities. This is relatively easy when the governing bodies are people we respect, or we like and desire to follow. But the reality is, this isn’t always the case. We see the opposite of this throughout the Bible of great leaders following and respecting governing authorities who are not respectable, or followers of Christ. Jesus is a great model.
We do not have to agree with our governing authorities to be subject to them, and we need to respect the authority because God has established it. I loved how Pastor Kris, in his devotional today, put it, “Christians, we obey a higher law, but that doesn’t mean we are above the law.“
Today we face such a politically charged society that feels deeply divided and fractured, and it seems ripe for a place where Christ can be glorified, and love can prevail. I have no idea where you stand politically, and honestly, I don’t care. Your political affiliation has nothing to do with your association with Christ, and you should not merge those because they are like oil and water - they won't mix well.
Read Romans 13, bring all of yourself to this book, and specifically this chapter and inspect your heart and mind. Paul takes us on this emotional journey in the first seven verses and then brings us to 8-10.
“Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” - Romans 13:8-10 NIV
Love! Love your neighbor as yourself. Love your political rival as yourself. You fill in the blank with whatever is pushing you to your limits in this politically charged society, and be reminded of love. I need this message, I can find myself in a deep dark place around this topic, and need to be reminded to love. And I surely need to be reminded of the final verse of this chapter, instead of doing what is in my flesh, I should do this:
“Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” - Romans 13:14 NIV
