Hebrews 1 - Jesus
Hebrews 1 - Jesus
According to the Hebrews introduction from the NIV translation, neither the author nor the audience of this book is specifically named, but the book itself reveals its nature and purpose. The recipients are Jesus-believing Jews who are in danger of falling away from the faith. They are likely in Italy, since the author passes on greetings to them from those who are from Italy—probably their friends who are traveling elsewhere. The goal of the whole book is to show the superiority of the final realities God has revealed in the new covenant to the temporary ones of the first covenant.
With that in mind, we read Hebrews chapter one, and it makes sense why the author feels a little like a young boy saying my dad can beat up your dad. We read in the opening and all through chapter one and hear that Jesus is better and superior to the prophets, he is better than angels, that Jesus sits next to God and Jesus is the exact representation of God.
Why is this important? Why does the author spend a full chapter talking about Jesus being superior, and what does that mean for us today?
“But to us living in these last days, God now speaks to us openly in the language of a Son, the appointed Heir of everything, for through him God created the panorama of all things and all time.” - Hebrews 1:2 TPT
This makes me think of Father Richard Rohr when he said;
“Jesus came as a human being not to teach us how to go to heaven, but to how to be a fully alive human being here on this earth.”
Why is this important to us? Because Jesus modeled for us how to live as humans here on earth.
David Guzik’s commentary said this:
It isn’t so much that Jesus brought a message from the Father; He is a message from the Father. The idea is that Jesus is far more than the latest or best prophet. He has revealed something no other prophet could.
i. The revelation from Jesus Himself was unique, because not only was it purely God’s message (as was the case with every other inspired writer) but it was also God’s personality through which the message came. The personality of Paul, Peter, John, and other Biblical writers is clear in their writings. Yet in the revelation from Jesus we see the personality of God.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus! We just need to focus our thoughts around Jesus, He is our model, He is our example, He is the center of it all. As silly as it sounds, and as cheesy as they are, the WWJD bracelets were right on message, What Would Jesus Do? There is no other question we need to ask, and clarity, we need to seek as we walk through life, and as we evaluate our steps. Jesus would love others, and he commanded that to us, He simplified the entire Old Testament for us in four words, Love God and Love Others.
Jesus really is the language of God. May He be our model and our centering today.
