Acts 12- Unstoppable

Acts 12- Unstoppable

Acts 12 is a continued picture of the great persecution the early Jesus movement faced. We have read this through the book so far, and now we see King Herod ramp it up, arresting many and even putting to death James, the brother of John. This set the stage for a dramatic and epic vanishing act for Peter.

“When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover. So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.” - ‭‭Acts‬ ‭12:3-5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Peter was a big prize for King Herod, and as we read this rilled up the Jews and caused a great level of excitement in the community. Not a positive thing for the Jesus movement, they were coming up again great resistance, and constant persecution and challenges. But, we a profound and transcending message is delivered through this chapter that must be our takeaway today and prayerfully every day. Our God is Unstoppable! The Gospel cannot be contained, and He will make a way no matter the circumstances or situation. Check this out;

“Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.” - ‭‭Acts‬ ‭12:7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I will let you dive into Acts 12 and read the rest, it’s as good as any great escape you can remember in your favorite movie scene. An angel of the Lord delivered Peter from prison and certain death and brings him to safety at the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark.

Reading all of this took me to the Elevation Worship song Unstoppable God. https://youtu.be/De6gZZT1690

Unstoppable God

Let Your glory go on and on

Impossible things

In Your name, they shall be done

Nothing can stop God. His Glory will go on and on, and impossible things are done in His name. God delivered Peter, and Herod was delivered by an angel another way. The Bible tells us that because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.

Reading today, at least for me, is inspiring but, in some ways, feels a bit out of reach. Angels delivering Peter and taking out the big bad King Herod. How does this relate to my life today? Well, this might feel or seem out of reach, but the reality is these things happen today, and I believe they happen regularly. These miracles are all around us, God is moving, and God is working; we just do not always have the eyes to see or the faith to believe. We also see with only a few words in this chapter the power of prayer.

“...where many people had gathered and were praying.” - ‭‭Acts‬ ‭12:12‬b ‭NIV‬‬

No matter our situation or circumstance, we should regularly take our concerns to the Lord in prayer. Pray and believe for great things, in the name above all names, Jesus Christ. Our God is Unstoppable, and we must remember;

“But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.” - ‭‭Acts‬ ‭12:24‬ ‭NIV‬‬
