Handbook for Life

Handbook for Life - Colossians 3:11-25

In the first part of Colossians 3, we read all about being Alive in Christ, taking off our old self, and putting on our new self, basically changing our clothes of life. The old tattered clothes are replaced with a wardrobe of royalty. We are dressed in Christ Jesus, wholly renewed in Him.

The second part of Colossians 3 focuses on the now what, our handbook of life. We are now clothed in Christ, what comes with that and how should we live?

“Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.” - ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:11‬ ‭NIV‬‬

When we are made new in God’s image, there are no dividing lines. We are all equal, one in Christ. Racism and sexism abolished forever. Our unity in Christ brings unity in all but does not drive us to uniformity. There is beauty in our differences, but there is no superiority in them. Our first bullet point in the handbook of life is unity.  United as one, its time to live it out, and this is what that looks like.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” -‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:12-14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The new you and the new me are clothed in the royalty of Christ should take on the character of Him. He is love, and we should love as He loved us, modeling compassion, kindness, and humility. And, possibly, the biggest ask of us is forgiving others as the Lord forgave us. This is huge! I have watched a life closely deeply impacted by unforgiveness, and it breaks my heart. This person is very close to me, and I watch just about every interaction with this person is affected by a deep wound that has been carried for decades, and has robbed so much joy, and life. Forgiveness is critical to fully experience the peace, love, and joy that comes with being clothed in Christ. A few additional points in our handbook include love and forgive others as Christ modeled to us, and support each other.

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” - ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:15-17‬ ‭NIV‬‬

He we read the clothing we are wearing should be more than just our attire, it should become who we are. This new you and new me is one with Christ and living as Christ, walking it out in our daily lives.

Paul goes on to list some instructions, some really practical things that come with living it out. At the end of those, he closes with this.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” - ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:23-24‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Such a powerful and practical guide for our lives.
