Vacation Bound

Vacation Bound - Colossians 3: 1-11

Think for a moment about your last vacation. Ok, I am not talking about a family trip when you have young children, I am talking about a vacation. If you were not aware, those are two very different things. Get your mind on the last vacation, and think about the planning, the preparing and then the anticipation of that trip. The vacation bound mindset is one of pure joy and excitement. Robin and I had the opportunity to travel to Hawaii with some of our best friends, and once the trip was booked and the details landed, we were so excited and full of anticipation for the trip. The vacation bound mindset is a beautiful thing.

As I read Colossians 3 this morning, I think elements of the Christian life should be more like the vacation bound mindset. Check this out:

“Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” - ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:1-2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Paul is guiding and directing the Colossians to remember and think about the destination. Setting our minds on the destination should change the way we process and think about the journey. Just like the vacation bound mode does, we can overcome a lot of the journey because we know Hawaii is coming, right!? This is what Paul is doing, pushing us to lift our head up and look to Christ, and set our minds on things above.

“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” - ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:3-4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

If you find yourself ever saying something like this, “but you don’t know what I did in my past.” then this verse if for you. As a Christ-follower, a Christian your past is gone, vanished, covered and hidden with Jesus. Do not let Satan rent cheap space in your mind and hold your past over you.

Alive in Christ, this is who we are! And because this is who we are, we should act and respond accordingly. Those old ways, our past behaviors, and baggage that once dominated our life needs to be put to death.

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.” - ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Yes, we used to do these things, but now in Christ and focused on a new destination, our actions must look different.

“You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.” - ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:7-8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Setting our mind on the destination changes the journey. So, what do we do with this today? Do you know your destination, your ultimate vacation spot in the end? When Christ appears, v4 tells us we will appear with him in glory. This is our destination, glorifying, praising, and worshiping God, our father.

Today, let's rise above our current situations and circumstances and get focused on the destination, a destination that absolutely should shape our view of the journey we are on.
